NFL Uniforms We Miss

via Josh H. Ellis cocktailsports.com (Nov 10th, 2009)

On Sunday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers wore their creamsicle throwback uniforms, possibly the most outlandish uniforms in modern day sports history. Personally, I love this uniform. It’s one of many uniforms I wish would make a return to sports. Here are the top 5 NFL uniforms, from my lifetime (1978-Present) I wish would make a comeback:

1.) Tampa Bay Buccaneers 1976-1996 – Discussed above. I was 4 years old when I first saw this uniform and instantly fell in love with the helmet logo and color scheme. Somehow, it just fits Tampa Bay.

2.) Seattle Seahawks 1983-2001 – I am a huge fan of the way the Seahawks integrated three of my favorite colors: blue, silver and green, into a uniform. Plus, the Seahawk logo on the helmet was much more intimidating than their current logo.

3.) New England Patriots (merger-1992) - Though I hate the Patriots more than any other professional sports franchise, I love this uniform. The color scheme fits the name Patriot better as well.

4.) Denver Broncos (1968-1996) – This uniform, in part, gave rise to the nickname, “Orange Crush.” The Broncos have since opted to go with more muted shades of blue and orange.

5.) Houston Oilers – The NFL should have forced Bud Adams to release the Oilers name, uniform and history to Houston when they were awarded their new franchise. Instead, “Love Ya’ Blue” belongs to the folks up in Nashville. Pure blasphemy!

Amen, to the Oilers comment, and to the characterization of Bud above. When franchises move, the cities they leave should have an automatic claim on the name, colors and records of the team if it's been there 10 years or more, just the way it happened in Cleveland.

Also (should have included this with the previous comment) I agree with your comments on the Patriots and Broncos uniforms. I prefer bright and bold to "stylish." Also, I hate any jerseys in which the numbers have a thin outline around the numbers, with the main jersey color showing between (as do the Patriots). It's as if you have an astigmatism when you look at the numbers.

I totaly agree that the Oiler name, history and logo should have stayed in Houston. I like the Idea of the ten year claim the city should have to It's football team.

Perhaps if I was 10-15 years older, I'd be more attached to the eyestrain-inducing colors of the Broncos, Bucs, and Oilers. However, the uniform changes in each one of those teams was a drastic improvement over the prior designs. The Broncos launched themselves into a new age with the running horsehead logo, a design that became the envy of other teams in the NFL. The Bucs new look actually matched the attitude of a typical football player in 1990's, instead of a lithe pirate that looked better on a Pittsburgh baseball uni. And no comment on the Oilers, for I have too many words on how team names based on industry have nothing to do with modern sports. Except for Steel perhaps, since it exudes strength. I think the current look of the league is the best it has ever looked. There isn't a single uniform that I despise, unlike in previous decades.
